What is Self Improvement? As the name suggests, it is the improvement of one's knowledge, status, or character by one's own efforts. It's the quest to make ourselves better in any and every facet of life.
Now, see this quote from The New Atlantis, a journal on Technology and Society.
It is easy to dismiss the self-help literature as a money-making machine for writer tycoons; so much of it obviously is. But studying self-help seriously not only illuminates the American character but may actually turn up some needed wisdom.''
It is all the efforts you make every second, every minute, hour, and day to continually improve yourself.
To be a better you. A better improved version of yourself. As each day passes.
Today i share with you 3 best self help books written by the super amazing Thea Westra of Forward Steps.
But before we meet her, let's delve into the science of SELF HELP, AKA, Self Improvement.
Table Of Contents
The Science Of Self Help AKA Self Improvement
According to The New Atlantis, a journal on Technology and society, https://www.thenewatlantis.com/publications/the-science-of-self-help,
''It is easy to dismiss the self-help literature as a money-making machine for writer tycoons; so much of it obviously is. But studying self-help seriously not only illuminates the American character but may actually turn up some needed wisdom.''
Sighting quotes from The New Atlantis article stated above, it is said that ''Recently, however, neuroscientists have begun to recognize the importance of a thick fatty substance called myelin, or white matter. Daniel Coyle quotes one UCLA neurology professor as declaring myelin to be nothing less than “the key to talking, reading, learning skills, being human.”
According to the journal, Myelin plays a very crucial part in our brain functions controls because the brain's neural ''circuits require the production of Myelin to regulate their function.
Myelin makes the neural circuits signals faster and stronger and helps in those signals’ precise placement. And it is serious work that best stimulates myelin manufacture. The more one diligently practices a particular activity, the more myelin is wrapped round and round the active nerve fibers.
As you can see, self help and self empowerment are things that can be learned and this involves the power of habit. Learning and unlearning. Practicing on a daily basis to become better and better.
The Power Of Habit
What you do without subconsciously thinking about it is an habit. When you do repeatedly, you form an habit.
Habits are rituals and behaviors we automatically carry out without a second thought.
We have good and bad habits. To change bad habits, we have to deliberately work on replacing them with good ones.
The Power of habit is a powerful book written by Charles Duhigg, a Pulitzer prize winning author. The Power of Habit explores the science of habit formation of habits in our lives, companies and societies. Power Of Habit essentially talks about habit formation and reformation.
“The Power of Habit is not a magic pill but a thoroughly intriguing exploration of how habits function. Charles Duhigg expertly weaves fascinating new research and rich case studies into an intelligent model that is understandable, useful in a wide variety of contexts, and a flat-out great read. His chapter on ‘keystone habits’ alone would justify the book.”
This is why you should develop the habit of reading.
Reading books that will shape a better you and place you on the path for living a great life.
